Ideas born in Dreams

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

Minutes after the opening of the exhibition, I stand in front of the gallery with an unconscious smile on my face and think about how art helps us to delve into other worlds, where everything is as we dream it. Just then, a young gentleman leaves the gallery and notes with pure enthusiasm, "Every picture has the word 'freedom.' on it!" He seems happy to have discovered freedom tonight. But what are its dimensions during a pandemic? I go back and look at the beautiful works of Karina Popova. I see romance and sincerity, I see some ethereal dreams. Dreams! These are Carrie's dreams, but also the dreams of all of us - freedom, love and travel. There is nothing in the gallery to distract us from the images and words, from the words-images and the images-drawings. When you are left alone facing every work, you see in it exactly what you can allow your mind to see on paper. When you go out and look back, you notice the next person standing in front of the same picture and you see something completely different - you see an intimate moment of inspiration. "Inspiration" - the word I hear many times that night, uttered by visitors of different ages and background at the exhibition. People are challenged by Carrie's sincerity and they themselves relax and share their feelings. We are wearing masks tonight, but they are only on our faces!

Karina's own words for the exhibition

The works I present in this exhibition and in this special space - gallery "[a] cube contemporary" are an installation of porcelain objects and a series of ink drawings. In the installation you can see some fantastic moments, captured through the photography that most accurately conveys the idea of the magical and the dual, the mirror images and their role in my daily life and imagination. This is a true and personal story, but inspired by dreams. Maintaining a surreal connection between reality and fiction, through mirrors and reflections the duplication of reality is transferred to my visual searches and discoveries. Ideas are born in our dreams, unreal things happen and yet they remain an unsolved and deep mystery for all of us. Every idea in art is first born in a certain language and its role is unchanged. In drawings, words have their place in a free and poetic form, smoothly following the curves of ink, which often only leads to the creation of works.
